Autumn, Art & Apples Plein Air Paintout

Autumn, Art & Apples Plein Air Paintout

Sunday October 9th – Friday October 14th
Calling all 2-D artists!  Come paint en plein air in beautiful Charlevoix, Michigan!  This event is sponsored by the Charlevoix Circle of Arts and coincides with the 33rd Annual Apple Fest Weekend, celebrating the spectacular fall color of Northern Michigan.  Apple Fest typically brings thousands of visitors into town from all over the Midwest.  Over 30 area orchards bring dozens of varieties of traditional and heirloom apples to town.  Nestled between Lake Michigan and Round Lake, Charlevoix offers quite a variety of beautiful views to paint!  The area is dotted with rolling hills, small farms and orchards, boat docks and miles and miles of shoreline!

Unlike many other plein air events, the Charlevoix Circle of Arts is offering something different: artists have the option of painting for up to six days, rather than just one day.  Sign-in can be done any day, beginning Sunday, October 9th, up through Friday, October 14th.  It's your choice: paint up to six days -- or just one day.  By offering a wider window of painting time, artists may choose to paint sunrises, sunsets, late-day views, etc.  And if the weather is rainy one day, chances are that the rest of the days will be sunny.
There are tables downstairs at the CCA where you can do your framing.  Please bring your own framing supplies -- they are not provided.  No sawtooth hangers, please!  Framed, ready-to-hang artwork is due at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts by Friday afternoon at 3:30.

The Opening Reception Art Preview  and Wet Painting Sale will be Friday, October 14, from 6 - 8 PM.  Artwork from the Paint-Out will be on view and on sale, accompanied by a light dinner and wine reception.  This will be heavily advertised and art buyers will pay $10 per person to attend the Preview Sale on Friday night. Your paid registration will include a ticket to admit you to this event.

Artists may choose to remove unsold paintings at the end of the evening or they could chose to leave them on display at the Circle of Arts until October 31st.  All artwork must be removed by that date.

Sales: Artists receive 70% of sale price; 30% of sale price goes to benefit the Charlevoix Circle of Arts.  Checks will be mailed to artists after the end of the Plein Air Show, October 31st.

Registration by mail or at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts: $20.00
$5 discount for early registration by October 1st; $5 discount if CCA member.  Registration includes ticket to the Wet Painting Reception with light dinner buffet, wine and music.

Please note: Pre-registration gets you a discount, but you still will need to come to the Circle of Arts and have your blank canvases or papers stamped on the back before you begin your plein air painting.  Also -- if you come in on Sunday with canvases - and run out later in the week, you can bring more canvases in to get stamped.

Just added: Thursday evening, October 13, there will be a special cruise for artists and their friends on the Keweenaw Star,  an excursion boat.  Boat will sail us around beautiful Round Lake down to Boyne City and back.  Live music provided by the Charlevoix Sax Quartet!  Cost: $10 per person.  Cash bar and "finger food".  A fun way to enjoy the sights (and sounds) and mingle!  Details to follow.

A list of suggested "cool sites to paint" will be added as the paint-out approaches!  We'll also be handing out simple maps of sites to paint, places to stay, good places to eat, etc.  Here's a partial list:

  • Wind Ridge, Cal Kemppainen's home and studio, set on acres and acres of rolling apple and pear orchards.  South of Charlevoix on US31, across Ferry Road from Bier Art Gallery.
